John’s Story...

John Griffiths, a programme manager for GKN Aerospace, took part in The Five Valleys Sportive 2016. A keen cyclist, John successfully completed the challenging route and enjoyed his day cycling in the valleys of South Wales.

Whilst at the event, John read Prostate Cymru’s awareness leaflets which included key risk statistics about prostate cancer such as 1 in 8 being the risk of having prostate cancer as a Welshman. When invited to his GP surgery in November 2016 for a mid-life health check, a free check offered by the NHS to all men between the ages of 40 and 74, John asked his doctor for a PSA test. The PSA (prostate specific antigen) test is a blood test that can indicate prostate problems such as prostate cancer.

John’s PSA results showed that he had an elevated PSA level. Further tests and biopsies revealed an enlarged prostate, high levels of testosterone and signs of cancer leading to John’s prostate cancer diagnosis in early 2017. John’s cancer is being treated with hormone replacement therapy and chemotherapy.

John had not displayed any symptoms of the disease ahead of his diagnosis and there was no family history of prostate cancer. John admits that he was ignorant about prostate cancer until he took part in The Five Valleys Sportive. Prostate Cymru’s awareness material spurred John on to speak about his prostate health with his GP. John wants to encourage men to visit their doctor more regularly, noting “The average British bloke has a reluctance to talk about medical problems and to visit their GP to discuss issues down below”.

Taking part in The Five Valleys Sportive, which is taking place on 3rd September this year, helps support Prostate Cymru’s key aims. One of the charity’s key objectives is to raise awareness and educate Welsh men about prostate diseases and their risk. Prostate Cymru’s awareness team regularly visit workplaces, sports, rotary and social clubs to deliver talks free of charge thanks to the support of fundraisers like John Griffiths.
